Gartner® Predicts 2024: build a sustainable and collaborative digital workplace infrastructure

Back to the Future with Legacy Applications

[oc_spacer height=”15″]On 12 April 2018, oneclick was a guest at the Microsoft event “Back to the Future” in Wallisellen, Switzerland. During the afternoon, the Swiss application environment was analysed and solutions presented, how applications can be modernised and migrated. In light of digitalisation and changing customer requirements, companies are facing the challenge to set-up their IT structure in the most future-oriented and agile way possible. Often obsolete applications are still in use, which cause increased cost and time expenditure or even system failures. Due to the increased scope of functions, it is a big challenge for companies to replace legacy systems completely. Software, which was partially developed over decades, includes additional functions and interfaces, which standard software does not offer. A complete replacement of systems is therefore particularly difficult.

Nonetheless, the cost pressure, the desire to be able to work on the move and device independently, as well as an altered risk situation, demand new, flexible and secure IT solutions. Therefore, many Swiss companies restructure their IT. The trend is moving away from operating internal IT infrastructures to outsourcing resources and applications to an external cloud service provider. This trend can be illustrated using analysis: According to an estimate of MSM Research, the use of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) in the Swiss market place will increase from 23.2% in 2016 to 50.4% in 2019.

Modernisation through Platforms

The fear of high new development or implementation costs as well as operation disruptions is the most common reason why companies stick to obsolete software. However, the switch has to take place at the latest when system and security gaps can no longer be closed. Here, companies often rely on expensive refactoring. However, with the help of oneclick™, it is possible to defer this investment without any problems. The complete system immediately reaches current state of the art technology with the 100% web-based system and grows with future requirements. Directly achievable results are, for example, a web-based and encrypted delivery of the existing environment via streaming to improve mobility and security, as well as automation of the provisioning process to increase productivity. Using a tested migration path, it is also possible to do a re-platforming of existing applications to an Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider to increase general availability, scalability and flexibility. “With oneclick™ companies are able to continue to operate their legacy systems and modernise them with low expenditure. Older software is enriched with the advantages of the cloud, and subsequently allows contemporary working“, says Dominik Birgelen, CEO of oneclick AG.

Due to the success of this event, a follow-up event “Back to the Future” will take place on June 26, 2018 in Wallisellen. Interested persons can access the free registration here.
